Lacking Symmetry

Due to the fact that I'm (reluctantly) beginning a drawing class in a few weeks, I've decided to break out my sketching pencils and see if I'm still as shit as I use to be. For the record, I am. I use to love drawing. It was something that I did in my downtime when I was younger, probably about middle school age. It was therapeutic. I mostly drew Disney characters, to be perfectly honest. I was pretty good at them, but that was probably because they were one dimensional and didn't require shading or anything fancy. I recall being rather proud of a drawing I did of the wicked witch in Snow White (upon reflection, it's not really that great.) When it came to actually drawing people, I was absolutely terrible. I'm not just saying that to be modest or anything, I mean I was so, so bad. I don't like drawing people for the exact opposite reason I love photographing them. Photographing a person is organic and natural (most of the time), whereas trying to press them out of graphite is so forced to me and I can never capture any element of them. This is why I'm really freaked out for my class next quarter. I'm not good at shading or making things look realistic. Nor can I draw straight lines without a ruler or posses any sense of symmetry. Can't I just draw cartoon characters and vague, intimate objects? Sigh. By the way, for someone who has never had an ounce of artistic ability, I sure do have a lot of art supplies. While looking for my set of pencils, I found acrylic paints, oil pastels and water colours. I'm thinking of finding ways of mixing mediums (the aforementioned, as well as photography, maybe) to fill my time for the rest of the summer. Any ideas on how I could do that? Links would be fun if you know of any fun art blogs. Do any of you do artsy things? Let me know. I'm going to go finish the relaxing playlist I'm creating on iTunes and do some painting or something. Night. xx

"for someone who has never had an ounce of artistic ability, I sure do have a lot of art supplies" - I can relate to that :3. Mixing photography and painting sounds like a great idea, but I have no clue how to do that. Do share your result, however, I'm curious :)
If you wanna do some painting, just for fun, I remember really liking this artist: http://www.youtube.com/user/sakaihouichi#p/u/84/yUFRu9Aft1w

Partly because I love cats, but mostly because it seemed easy and fun to do XD

quite a few people in my family are artists so from a young age i have adored art! I always loved drawing and still do.
I'm fairly average when it comes to drawing, my painting is pretty good though... I do art in school so i've improved loads! I adore mixing oil pastels with colour pencils, gives the best picture :) In my opinion :)

do you print any of your photos on to canvas? because if you did do this then painting varnish on makes it look a lot more alive and things. Also you could try with nail varnis perhaps?

1) Taking an art class in college is not that scary. They all start out with the basics - basics of shading, etc. From the ones I took, each project was progressively more complex than the one before. (They're not going to expect you to be M.C. Escher from the get go.) For some people, drawing will come naturally. For others, such as myself, it takes a lot of time and practice. 7 years later, I look back at some of the pieces and think: damn, I don't think I can do that now.

2) Mixing mediums often renders the most amazing results. In an interview, the artist/animator, Julia Pott (video: My First Crush), spoke briefly about how she doesn't like to limit herself to one medium. She'll mix using acrylic paints with a pen. One thing that I've seen done is using a photograph of a person and then painting in the environment around them.

3) Your drawing is pretty good. The character is recognizable; she has the distinguishing features. I think you need to cut yourself some slack. You're obviously creative, and there will be mediums that you're already amazing at - and others that may need a bit more work. But, to reiterate, this drawing is pretty flippin' good.

I totally agree. That drawing is far better than anything I could spit out of a pencil. Good luck with your art class, I'm sure you'll do fine. :P I also have more art supplies than a terrible artist should lol. I've always been a dreamer :P

I do a lot of art things. I draw, do oragami, I paint and everyone really likes them. I do have the hands for such things but I don't do them much because I'm spending most of my time doing my true joy. Writing. That is, in my own opinion, what my hands were made for.

I'm a freshman in art college right now, so I guess you could say I do some artsy things. Don't worry about the drawing class. I'm an illustration major but there are loads of photography majors in my foundation drawing class who are worried about drawing. There really isn't much to worry about, they'll probably start with the basics and you'll do fine. But drawing is a great skill to have because it lets the eye focus on the subject's actuality before it guides the hand. It helps with visualizing things more clearly. Good luck!

As a person with no artistic talent I think your Snow White drawing was pretty good. I could maybe draw a stick figure given enough time but that's about the extent of my talents. That's why I have artistic friends to draw for me. That said I do love making collages and have a habit of coloring in coloring books to releive stress. I think a collage is a great mixed media idea. I make them for my summers with a mix of pictures and maps and posters and tickets and whatever else I've collected.

I like your drawing!
It is better than the tracings I used to do of disney characters xD
Have fun with your class I'm sure you'll be fine!

Your drawing of the witch from snow white was really good! I can't really draw at all. I feel that whenever I'm not really trying, the artwork ends up a lot better. Plus, I have a heavy and unsteady hand, and I work suuuper slow. xD But I really do like art, and I hope you have fun in your art class! :D

I'm taking a theatre Costume design in university right now, and it's quite fun. I've never been extremely artistic, in fact, I'm pretty bad, but this class has got me looking at things in a whole new perspective. I always liked observing people, but now I pay attention to a lot more detail. I'm actually pretty good at designing costumes now, but I'm shit at drawing faces and hands, so I just stick to the body. xD

I am the exact same way. In the back part of the basement in my house, I have a whole shelf dedicated to art supplies. Watercolour paints and pencils, pastels, sketch pad upon sketch pad, a whole mini Harry Potter lunch pail full of art pencils and erasers and shaders.

But I suck.

I took art classes for a few years, first drawing then painting, and I was ok at the shading and filling in with colour. But the actual DRAWING, the real creative part? I had my teacher come over every week and fix it.

Nowadays, I just admire other peoples creativity. Although, I am really into makeup and have been told I am not half bad. So maybe thats my creative thing?

I just wanted to say, you inspire me alot. You're style and videos, i've watched your stuff for so long. thank you!
Why don't you make something? start sewing or knitting? Knitting sounds crazy but it's actually really addictive, and you feel really proud after you made something, even if it's a scarf xx
