Since discovering the booktuber community, I have sort of become obsessed with watching book hauls, reviews and various book-related discussion videos. I discovered them around the same time as I received my Kindle and they have just been a massive inspiration to start reading again after a bit of a book-related drought last year. As a further motivator to start reading, I have decided to add booktuber to my YouTube resume and dive into the style that I've been admiring from afar. But I need your guys' help with how you think I should do this.
The thing about wanting to fit into a certain community on YouTube is that it won't always make sense to people outside of that area. I started an entire beauty channel because the format of those videos is just so specific, that it would be been awkward for people unfamiliar who are just tuning into a random video on my channel. Also, you know, I didn't want to alienate the small male audience of my videos (though a few of you boys have commented on my kayleyscloset videos, which is great! I'm happy I can be entertaining when talking about things that don't necessary pertain to your gender!) So. Anyway. The point is that if I was going to do book related videos, I'd like to take on a specific format that is seen in booktuber videos. It's a bit like a book club. Basically, it'd be book hauls (where I should what books I've bought, give a summary and show you guys what I'll be reading), reviews (more in-depth, but spoiler-free) and then sort of book-related discussion. For instance, ChapterChicks have 'Novel Notions,' theReadables has 'Let's Talk' and CassJayTuck has 'Random Thought,' just to name a few. I'd like to develop my own style within that sort of format. But that doesn't really have a place on my owlssayhooot channel.
Essentially, what I'm asking, is whether or not you guys would hate me for starting ANOTHER channel? I know it's annoying when YouTubers have liked six channels for their iPhone and blahblah. But I sort of like to think that all of my channels have their own purpose (except for kayleyhyde, which, um, is in hibernation at the moment.) I like being able to organise myself in that way. I'm sort of an organisational freak, so it's sort of like having folders of different videos, you know? Also, I'm sure I'll get "she probably just wants to make more money etc" comments, which, I just want to confirm, is far from the truth. By starting a new channel, I'm actually doing the opposite. I could just start doing these videos on my main channel, where I already have 40,000+ subscribers, but I just don't think it'd be fair to people who aren't really into that sort of thing and don't understand the format. So. Yeah. It's never been about money and never will be with me. I just really like talking about a wide variety of things and sometimes it just doesn't all fit in the same channel. I just really like things, you guys. And I like sharing them with people and if I can inspire other people who may be in a reading slump to read in the way booktubers have inspired me to start picking up more books, I would be ecstatic.
SO YES. I have rambled a bit, I am sorry. I intend to mention this blog post in a video where I discuss this topic in an abridged fashion (or, if I get loads of positive feedback, I'll just go ahead and start the channel without asking in a video, who knows). Let me know your thoughts. I am posting this on my blogspot blog, which has still not resolved the whole can't-respond-to-comments thing, so if you really have any questions, you can ask on my tumblr. By the way, this blog post sounds like I take myself seriously. But really, I just want to constantly insist to people who enjoy my content, that I really don't take anything obnoxiously seriously. Except the temperature of my hot beverages. Once they are cold, they're in that microwave within seconds. I ain't messing around.
Okay, right. I'm going to go now and READ, ha, see what I did there? You guys let me know if you'd like a channel for books and if not, why? Also, if the agreement is 'no,' than I'll probably try to work in short snippets of reviews, like I have in the past. It'd just be a very condensed format.
Hope you're all having fantastic weekends and I'll talk to you soon. Thanks for reading x

I think I'll post edits to things I want to respond to in the comments...
Edit: For the person worried about my not being regular with content. You have such little faith! :P I have uploaded consistent content for years and I've never really had a problem with that unless I just haven't had a video idea. No need to worry. I am busy, but videos are a thing I plan, just like I put time aside to hang out with friends or write an essay. I'd like to have one video for each of my three channels (owlssayhooot, kayleyscloset and this one) per week. Unless I haven't got something specific for one, of course. I never force content out of myself.
Also, to the person who is worried about it getting less attention, that really isn't a problem. If people don't want to watch, they don't have to. I'm not worried about it being less popular than my normal content. I just want to give the books justice and discuss books more thoroughly and in the format of my choice, which just doesn't fit on my main channel. I may not have a style on my main channel, but trying to squeeze in a specific format out of nowhere would be awkward, haha. It is totally selfish, but I want to be able to utilize the whole booktuber format because I think it would be fun. People on my main channel don't want to watch book hauls and an entire video on one book. The thing about having a channel with loads of subscribers is that you DO, to a certain extent, have to take into account that not everyone watches every video. I don't want people turned off from my channel that I have had for years because they start seeing this new, random format of videos that they aren't used to. Plus, as I stated before, it's just FUN to have different channels where I can organise things differently :)
In addition, I am considering using the playlist function on YouTube so that I can have a playlist of my kayleyscloset and book channel videos on owlssayhooot. So even if you don't want to subscribe, you could just go to my channel from time to time to see what's up and have them all collected there, if that makes sense! x
Man, I'm starting to feel like I'm repeating myself...Sorry if I am. Also this blog post is super weird. IT'S LIKE A LIVE STREAM BLOG POST. Anyway, like I said, I'm not decided. There are ways to incorporate it into my main channel, but it'd just be less fun and I'm selfish like that. I'll probably decide in the next week or so. We shall see. Thanks again for your input :) x

I *would* enjoy a new booktuber channel run by you, Kayley! I myself discovered the whole booktuber community on youtube a couple of months before you did, and I must say it really did get me a ton times more motivated to read than I was before. So yes, I am one person in your audience who would appreciate and enjoy all things book-related. x
I adore those types of videos, so of course I'd love you to do that channel. Thank you for all the new channels/ videos.
I would like to see you doing that kind of thing and I actually don't find it annoying when youtubers have different channels, because it is interesting to see these different facets - so go for it! :)
I think it's a good idea. I haven't watched any booktubers myself, but I can easily see how something like that would be interesting. Though that might just be because I have five English classes right now, so I'm sort of head deep in this stuff whether I want to be or not.
Maybe start a Booktuber series on kayleyhyde.
I would say no because you're a busy woman, and you'll probably make a book video like once or twice a month? I think your owlssayhooot subscribers would watch those too. Also, the more channels you have, the less attention you'll be giving to each :( OKay this is kind of selfish of me just because I want you to upload lots of kayleyscloset videos. But honestly I think putting the book videos on your main channel would fit well.
Kayley, I would absolutely love it if you started a booktuber channel.
I must admit, I'm a bit picky when it comes to booktubers, and only watch the select few like Sanne (booksandquills) - but you're one of the few people for whom I've been dying to start a booktuber channel!
SO pleased you're seriously considering this. :) DFTBA x
It’s at times like these where I wish people could categorise their videos. I think it ruins the idea of a channel not having this because I like a user's content in one source rather than having to sub several accounts. Plus I think for the creator's perspective it makes sense because that way you can add additional ventures like this without having to start from scratch when you've already worked so hard in building a strong audience.
Alas, I can't see YouTube implementing anything like this soon.
I think a new channel would be good, it would keep the content in its own area and it would encourage you to keep building upon it. Whereas on a main channel it might get forgotten about or brushed aside in favour of more random videos. At the same time though, if you do opt for putting them on your main channel I think most of your audience would appreciate book related videos. It's a tough one but I don't think either would be a bad choice, just a different one.
I would LOVE to see you make a whole new channel for books. I've never heard about the whole booktuber community, but it sounds awesome. The whole idea of a book-related channel is really great, and I might have to start doing this for myself as well! :)
I think it's a really good idea and I would love to see what you have to say on the matter.
But, is it really that necessary to make another channel? I think everyone who watches you would appreciate book videos by you.
Maybe you should just make a booktube series in your main channel.
I love this idea :) x
I think this is a really nice idea :) I don't think you'll need another channel though - unlike a beauty channel where not everyone is into fashion/make up, everyone IS into books, or at least one genre. It's like music, not everyone's into *everything*, but everyone's into *something*. You'd probably be reaching a wider audience doing it on your main channel also, which could introduce people to stuff they wouldn't normally read :)
I love both your current channels and would definitely subscribe to and watch another one just for books. I think it's an excellent idea. And even if you don't end up making another channel, please go ahead and make more videos about books on your main channel. Like you, I'm trying to read more, and I would love to hear your thoughts on books!
For what it's worth, I would also really like to hear more of your thoughts on films. I get the impression you see a fair number of movies - correct me if I'm wrong - and I bet you have very intelligent opinions about them! I'd be interested in hearing about not just current releases, but also re-watches, classics, etc.
I too would very much enjoy a book channel from you. I think it would be more beneficial to have a separate channel, as it would be easier to see them all in one place just like kayleyscloset. Very excited to see what comes from this!
I would really love to see a booktuber channel from you!
I would very much enjoy your booktuber channel (should you ever start one, haha.). Coming from another person who has gone through a slump where I barely read at all, I am definitely looking for new books to read and would love to find out what you have been reading & so on. :]
Commonplace Cat also mentioned films--that would be a good idea as well. What if you did books, and every so often make a video about films you have seen? I guess some films would be book-adaptations, so that would work in a sense...just an idea. But if I had to choose between books and films, I would love a booktuber channel more. ;P
xo Mel
Go for it, definitely!
If you want to dedicate a (relatively) big part of your video making to books, I think you should delve into the book tuber community with your own, new channel.
:-)
Well I say go for it! I can see how it could be troublesome for people who don't sub and just stop by your page every now and then for videos, but for people who sub (and I'm assuming this is the majority of regular youtube views?) it doesn't make much of a difference which channel a video was posted on, it will just show up in your subs! Of course, this is just my opinion. I personally don't mind youtubers having lots of channels (for the reason I just described).
Okay, I'm rambling. What I'm trying to say is that I love the idea of a booktuber channel and it doesn't bother me in the slightest that you're thinking of making another channel!
I would be thrilled if you make a book channel! I have been watching booktubers for a while now and I just really, really like it! Now I'm excited. :D
I think another channel just for books is a great idea. I like your taste in movies, books etc. and your opinion on them. Probably most of your owlssayhoot subscriber would like the videos about books, but I would prefer the third channel. And it's nice that you now have a way to use the playlist feature :D
I would actually love this! I've been reading more and more for fun (despite the schoolwork) and I just love having people whose taste I trust giving their advice/recommendations freely :]
I would love it! I love your videos no matter their content and I love reading so really this would just be an amazing way for all of that to come together! :) x
I don't see why you need to have yet another channel solely for books. I think it would be good if you post them on your regular channel because it seems that the majority of the people who subscribe to your channel would also enjoy watching these kind of videos.
I would ABSOLUTELY subscribe to that channel! I think it's a great idea. I am trying to read 100 books in 2012 so this would be wonderful for inspiration, I also understand the need to have everything organised and would definitely appreciate, as a viewer, having all the book-related videos in one place. I really love all of your videos and I'm sure this will be no different, so yeah, I think if this is something you want to do then definitely go for it :)
I think it's a good idea to take the book channel away from the owssayhooot channel - It makes more sense and it also gives people an option of whether they want to subscribe or not (rather than being 'forced' to, if they aren't into it). You should definitely do it, I am always inspired by your video choices and topics so I'd be really happy to see you branch out into book discussions! x
I'd really enjoy those videos. If that's something you wanna do, go for it. It'll be fun, and I'm sure quite a lot of your audience enjoy reading too, so it'll be interesting to see a new style/format with new varied content. Always good to see Youtubers I enjoy trying new things. Go for it! I look forward to watching :)
I think it would be cool to have a book channel, it's something different from your main one so it isn't like if you had five channels of the same kind. I wouldn't mind subscribing to your book one, because I love books too and would like to see you really do in depth reviews. Don't worry about what people think, if you are taking the time to write this blogpost about it, then we know you genuinely care about our opinion. Just have fun and do what you want!!
Yes! Yes, please do!
I really enjoy BookTube videos and you have such s specific... style(?) that would be really interesting to watch!
I love love love if you made another youtube channel in which you just talk about books. I would love to hear what you think about books I have already read and your suggestions for books that I should read. (Also I totally understand why you would want to make a new channel for organizational purposes. I am the exact same way.)
I guess my opinion is that its your channel (or channel's) and you can do whatever you want with it (them). That's kind of my opinion on a lot of things. I'm a very mello person. To put in a more elegant manner; I have my opinions, you have your's, and that's fine. We can still be friends.
Oh please do a book tubing channel! Once you mentioned I thought "This is awesome" and searched like crazy online and found loads of cool people! I love the readables and elizziebooks at the minute, what about you? I've started doing it myself, actually, every Wednesday (hahadaisymakesmelol)it's really fun to do! I can't wait to see what you come up with Kayley :)
I watch the Readables youtube and also The Story Siren (the youtuber, Kristy, uploads a new video every sunday and she is one of the creators of 'In My Mailbox' (v)blogposts) -check her out! I'm not a youtuber I'm just a blogger, but I watch them to pick ideas and because I like them, of course!
On making a new channel; I watch every video you make, I like them very much, because what you say or what you show in them is so much more interesting than any tv programme (I rarely watch it anymore, save for some series) and I can relate to many of the subjects you talk about, so wouldn't it be nice if you talked about books, authors, anything book-related?
anyway, whatever you do, good luck best wishes and share the passion!
xox
ps. excuse me if I might make mistakes, English is not my mother language ;)
I would love for you to have a book channel! I myself follow a lot of youtubers from the book reviewing community as well as the movie reviewing community.
DO IT!!!! I WANT TO LISTEN TO YOUR VOICE (which is awesome...) TALK ANOUT AWESOME BOOKS!!!!!
Sure Kayley, go for it. Book reviews and discussion from you would be welcome.
I am already looking forward to your book-related videos (and also to see what you name the channel!) :) I also discovered the booktuber community while trying to decide whether or not to get a Kindle (which I did, eventually, and it's proved really great for me)and think you would fit in well because, judging by, say, your review of Mockingjay, you do a really great job at analyzing books. So, yeah, looking forward to it!
P.S. I would love it if it would have a bit more of the book club feel. Like, maybe announcing the book you are next going to review so whoever wants could read it at the same time and discuss it in the comments(like John did with The Catcher in the Rye). I dunno. I'm sure whatever you come up with will be great :)
After reading this I think a new channel focused on books would be great, Kayley! The organization of having different channels for beauty, books, etc makes a lot of sense and is a favor to new and old subscribers. I'm 100% supportive of this and really looking forward to it :)
-K
Hey Keyley.. first comment to you ever, but i've been watching your videos for a pretty long while now.. You are brilliant!!!
so yeah.. please make a booktuber channel? :D it would be so awesome :))
DO IT DO IT DO IT
The way I see it, I love watching your videos and I love reading, so watching videos about books from you is doubly great. I agree that it's better on another channel too, because you get to make more in-depth videos, and because you can play around with the format more.
Also, it seems as if you're asking your subscribers for permission, and whilst I totally get that you want to keep them happy if you can, we're not your parents! Go with your instincts. :)
An additional thought - it's not the having of many channels that is annoying to subscribers, since everything just shows up on our feed anyway. What gets annoying is when second or third channels are just dumping places for sh*t videos recorded sideways on cameraphones that have no purpose. No one wants to watch those. But you're not proposing to do that, so I don't see why any subscribers should get annoyed at you :)
As a happy subscriber to your main and beauty channels, I say you should definitely start book-vlogging. Have you considered doing a book-collab channel?
Do it! It'll be great! And not the least bit annoying.
YESSS, I would totally watch book-vlogs!!!! You speak your mind really well in your normal vlogs and everything you talk about is really beautifully worded (whether you're doing a thoughts-from-places, or just talking in your room— it's one of the main reasons I love watching your videos) so I think you could do book-vlogs just as well :)
I don't have much to contribute except for a super enthusiastic YES! I would absolutely love to see this channel. It would introduce a lot of people to the booktuber community, and just generally be extremely enjoyable! I hope this happens and can't wait! :)
I would actually like for you to have a channel exclusively for books. I usually research a lot about a certain book before tackling it so having you, a person whose taste is quite similar to mine, give reviews and stuff would be brilliant. I hope this project pushes through and that you have a magnificent time with it, Kayley. :)
I'm about a week late on this convo, but YES YES YES! I want a book channel. I know you've discussed books on your main channel before, but I think having a new channel would, like you said, allow you to play around with the BookTube format. On a related note: I freaking love hauls! It gives me ideas for what books I should look for next. :]
YAY FOR BOOKTUBERS! And book bloggers :-P x
Thank you so much for the shout out! It took me a long time to find the source of our new subbers. They are coming from here so thank you! In terms of your question I would say go for it! Do what makes you happy. The book community is one of the best on youtube to be apart of because we don't compete, we support each other. I hope you do it!
